Case story

Sleaford Renewable Energy Plant

Logstrup is supplying cabinets for the main supply and distribution for substations for 400V and 690V AC and Control Boards for Boiler, Common auxiliaries, Building services, Steam auxiliaries and Straw handling. In total 280 modules of cabinet.

The end-user

Sleaford Renewable Energy Plant

Sleaford Renewable Energy Plant is a straw-fired plant, only the second of its kind in the UK. The plant can generate 38.5 MW enough to power 65,000 homes. The plant will combust 240,000 tonnes of straw – a by-product of wheat production – and save 150,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum.

The Project

A Danish engineering and contracting company was chosen as the contractor for the plant, and Logstrup was chosen as the supplier. This would be the fourth time Logstrup and the contractor collaborated. Logstrup supplied cabinets for the main supply and distribution for substations for 400V and 690V AC and Control Boards for Boiler, Common auxiliaries, Building services, Steam auxiliaries and Straw handling. In total Logstrup supplied 280 modules of electrical switchboard.

The Challenge

For the contractor this was the first straw-fired plant, they were contracted to construct, and therefore a lot of unknown challenges arose. One challenge was spacing, which meant that some of the boards delivered by Logstrup has been reduced to the limits in terms of physical size and depth. To minimize the physical dimensions of the switchboards, Logstrup developed solutions allowing form 4b feeders to be connected in common cable compartments. The solution enables the individual outlets to be shielded in an IP2x enclosure and meets the requirements to form 4b in minimal space. The production schedule was from the beginning very tight, with 4,000 man-hours to be conducted from July to November. With such a tight schedule, there was little room for change, but as with any first experience, there were plenty. This meant that the schedule for production and technical casework has been pushed to the limit. A complete documentation incl. diagrams and part list (3,000 pages) and datasheets for all components (2,000 pages) – in all 5,000 pages of documentation was delivered along with the 280 modules of the cabinet.

Why Logstrup

Close collaborations and premium quality switchgear

The main reasons why the contractor and end-user chose Logstrup are the high quality of the Logstrup Modular System and our low voltage electrical switchboards. The contractor spent a month at the Logstrup factory in Kvistgaard testing the switchboards; therefore location was a matter of importance for the contractor who is also based in Denmark. The previous collaborations also played a part in the selection for this project, as the contractor prefers few, but stable suppliers, who know their requirements, as it cuts down on time spent on the technical casework. Simultaneously, the supplier was well acquainted with the Logstrup Modular System and the service and quality that comes with it.
